The Munin colour palette

Attention: Content of this page should be moved to the Munin-Guide --> Visit the Guide now.

As of Munin 1.2.5 and 1.3.3 the colour palette in Munin is not adjustable or configurable except by source code change. In r1440 of the svn trunk the configuration keyword palette was introduced along with two palettes: old and default. This will be in 1.3.4, but probably never in the 1.2 series.

Since 1.2.5 and 1.3.3 each individual plugin may specify/override the colour for each field but there are no other facilities.

The new default palette had these design goals:

  • Good contrast
  • No "loud" colours first (red and orange would be loud) as they're very attention grabbing
  • Better looking colours (IMHO)
  • Configurability

I also want to cater to alternative palettes for colour blind or other uses. Anyone that works out a new palette please contribute it in a ticket or on the munin-users mailing list.

The page at provides a very nice colour selection wheel and simulated colour-blindness settings.

A plugin has been written to serve as a vehicle for colour palette testing. It is available at
